Tea farmer Weng Won

Please allow me to introduce you to Weng Won, 4th generation tea farmer, the face behind our Pouchong from Wenshan.

The face behind our Pouchong

For some, drinking tea is mostly about the experience that tea brings. For others, it goes further. Where exactly is the tea plant where the leaves in my cup come from? What does the scenery look like and who made my tea with great care and skill? In this blog, we take you virtually to the origin of our Pouchong oolong from Wenshan, northern Taiwan.

Wenshan

The origin

In the green hills of Ping Ling, Wenshan, a region in Taipei Province, lies the Sang Lin tea factory surrounded by breathtaking tea plantations. Wenshan is known as the origin of high quality Pouchong, or Baozhong, oolong. This type of tea is very slightly oxidized and is famous for its fresh and floral aromas.

Generation to generation

Tea Master

The tea plantation where the Pouchong comes from that we selected for HAO TCHA is run by tea farmer Weng Won. He is the 4th generation, which means that a lot of knowledge and skills have been inherited within his family. Since his teenage years he has mastered the craft of making tea. With over 50 years of practice, Weng is a true Tea Master.

Opportunities

Export

Weng Won discovered that in addition to focusing on producing premium quality tea, there is also an opportunity for growth in export areas, such as Europe and the US. These countries are increasingly valuing certification. This tea farmer is cleverly anticipating on this and can therefore make a larger group of tea lovers happy with his beautiful tea.

Productie proces

Changes

Faced with the aging of pickers and production professionals, further development of automation in production became necessary. An example is the energy-efficient dryer that allows the increase of production and the improvement of quality. Investments were also made in new pruning methods. The current production process is less labor intensive and less affected by changes in the weather.
Focus on opportunities

Latest technology

Production methods continue to evolve. Weng Won not only learns from his father's generation, but is also up-to-date with new technologies. For example, Pouchong aroma vapor is captured which is marketed as natural Pouchong flavored water. Pyramid tea bags are also produced with small leaf parts of Pouchong due to demand from the tea market. New ideas and challenging situations are an exciting part of a tea farmer's work every day.
