This surprisingly sweet tea tastes like caramel and honey and is therefore known as Honey Oolong. During its growth its leaves are superficially bitten by a small grasshopper and then plucked manually. In the traditional curing process the subsequent roasting of the leaves plays an important role. As a result the tea develops natural flavours of honey and fruits. This oolong is medium-oxidised and is rolled into little balls. This induces a thick, round mouth feel with whiffs of sweet liquorice in the aftertaste. Production of this oolong only started in 2000. Yet, many tea lovers have already discovered this beautiful variety. An elegant tea of exceptional quality from the Taiwanese mountains!
The origin
In the high, misty mountains with their lush vegetation, around Lugu in Nantou province, grow the Ginshuen and Chin-Shin varieties. These are plucked twice a year for the Empress Guei-Fei Oolong. The small insect Jacobiasca Formosana bites the leaves superficially during the growth of the plant. Therefore, no pesticides are used to welcome the bugs. This tea is therefore known as ‘bug bitten tea’. Only once a year, during summer, the leaves are harvested by hand. Tea Master Kuo brings in all his knowledge and experience during the processing of this tea. After a period of withering, first outside then inside, the leaves acquire their shape of little balls from being rolled for hours in a machine. Subsequently these balls are being heated, dried and finally roasted.
