This black tea is grown in the mountains around the ‘Sun Moon Lake’ in central Taiwan. It is named after the cultivar on which it is based: ‘Ruby TTES #18’. This is a hybrid of the Assamica variant from Myanmar and local, wild tea. The full, malty character can be traced to the Assam tea plant; the fresh eucalyptus aftertaste is typical for the wild variant. With tastes and scents of honey, caramel, prunes and cinnamon this tea has an enormous intensity. The mouth feel is full and ripe. In later infusions whiffs of resin and wood come to the fore. A balmy tea, which is perfect for a cold winter day!
The origin
Every year, but only in summer, the plants of the Ruby#18 variety are being harvested. This tea plant is frequently grown in the lower mountain areas, around the breathtaking Sun Moon lake in Nantou in central Taiwan. Due to the humid climate and stable temperatures throughout the year the Ruby#18 always produces a big harvest. After plucking, Tea Master Wang supervises the traditional processing. During this process the leaves are withered and then undergo a process of stewing and stirring. Further oxidation occurs by shaking of the leaves. Frying, rolling and drying constitute the final steps in this process.
Black large curly dry leaves, evenly colored brownish-red infused leaves with a bright deep amber infusion
Honey, caramel, ripe fruit and warm spices, such as cinnamon, but also a fresh mintiness
Sweetness of dark roasted caramel, a hint of umami with a full mouth feel followed by a cinnamon and eucalyptus aftertaste
