The origin of HAO TCHA tea

Honesty and transparency are core values for us, that’s why we think it’s important to be open about everything you might want to know about our tea. The origin is an important part of that. We take you from behind your screen to the piece of beautiful island where the leaves of your tea are picked and processed with great love and craftsmanship. Where did these leaves first see daylight?

Did you already know this?

  • Taiwan has an area of 36,000 square kilometers and is therefore slightly smaller than the Netherlands
  • 5 kg of freshly picked tea leaves yield about 1 kg of tea
  • The highest mountain in Taiwan is Yushan Mountain with 3952 meters, also known as “Jade Mountain”.

Where does my tea come from?

For some people it is essential to know where his or her chosen tea comes from; for others it is just ‘nice to know’. Does the tea come from Taiwan? ‘That doesn’t mean much to me’, I hear you think. In which region, on which mountain, at what altitude, or better still, in which tea garden grow the tea plants from which the leaves in my cup have been plucked?
Our selection

HAO TCHA tea

The teas selected by us come from different regions of Taiwan. We know exactly which tea to find where and we continue to search and taste in order to make the most beautiful teas accessible to you. For instance, in the mountainous area in central Taiwan, in the province Nantou, we found the complex, rich and honey-sweet Ruby18 black tea. But for the sweet and creamy, umami-like Tippy green tea we go to the Taipei region.

Tea producing regions

Tea is produced in all 15 provinces that Taiwan is divided into. The three islands of Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu are an exception. Each region has its tea specialties. The varieties planted and the environment, or terroir, determine the specialties per region most.

Special teas

Green tea, oolong tea, and black tea offer a completely different experience when drinking these varieties. Yet the leaves come from one and the same plant. Discover the exclusive selection of premium loose tea from Taiwan from HAO TCHA.
